Drug Information Portal

News from the National Library of Medicine!

The National Library of Medicine has developed a free online Drug Information Portal that you may be interested in. Information from their web site states:

"The NLM Drug Information Portal gives users a gateway to selected drug information from the National Library of Medicine and other key government agencies. At the top of the page are links to individual resources with potential drug information, including summaries tailored to various audiences.

Resources include the NLM search systems useful in searching for a drug, NLM research resources, resources organized by audience and class, and other NIH and government resources such as FDA and CDC. The search box in the middle of the page lets you search many of these resources simultaneously. More than 12,000 drugs can be searched using this facility. The portal covers drugs from the time they are entered into clinical trials (Clinicaltrials.gov) through their entry in the market place (Drugs@FDA). The PubMed/Medline link provides medical literature describing research, and TOXLINE provides toxicology literature. Resources such as MedlinePlus provide easy to read summaries of the uses and efficacy of a drug.

You may search by a drug's trade name or generic name. For example, the trade name "Advil" and the generic name "ibuprofen" will retrieve the same drug record. A spell checker gives suggestions if the name is not found. You can find embedded portions of names by using an asterisk at the beginning and/or end of a search term. Once a drug is found, a summary of the drug's type and usage is given, as well as links leading to further information at one of the portal's resources. Outside links open in a new window. Within a given drug record, you may click on the drug category and retrieve drugs with the same or similar uses. "

Sleep on It! How Snoozing Makes You Smarter!

In the latest issue of Scientific American Mind, Robert Stickgold and Jeffrey M. Ellenbogen have written an article on sleep. They claim, "During slumber, our brain engages in data analysis, from strengthening memories to solving problems."

Key Concepts from the article:
  • As we snooze, our brain is busily processing the information we have learned during the day.

  • Sleep makes memories stronger, and it even appears to weed out irrelevant details and background information so that only the important pieces remain.

  • Our brain also works during slumber to find hidden relations among memories and to solve problems we were working on while awake.

You can read the full article online at: http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=how-snoozing-makes-you-smarter

Patient Safety and Quality : an evidence-based handbook for nurses

Nurses play a vital role in improving the safety and quality of patient care—not only in the hospital or ambulatory treatment facility, but also of community-based care and the care performed by family members. Nurses need know what proven techniques and interventions they can use to enhance patient outcomes.

To address this need, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), with additional funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, has prepared this comprehensive, 1,400-page, handbook for nurses on patient safety and quality—Patient Safety and Quality: An Evidence-Based Handbook for Nurses. (AHRQ Publication No. 08-0043).
Experts in the field reviewed the literature, and their contributions are grouped into these sections:

Patient Safety and Quality / Evidence-based Practice / Patient-centered Care / Working Conditions—Work Environment / Critical Opportunities for Patient Safety and Quality / Tools

The full 1400 page handbook can be downloaded here: http://www.ahrq.gov/qual/nurseshdbk/

Testing Treatments: Better Research for Better Healthcare

"A 100-page book – ‘Testing Treatments: better research for better health care’ – was published by the British Library in 2006 and is available online without charge, licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported Licence.
This book is good for our health. It shines light on the mysteries of how life and death decisions are made. It shows howthose judgements are often badly flawed and it sets a challenge for doctors across the globe to mend theirways. Yet it accomplishes this without unnecessary scares; and it warmly admires much of what modern medicine has achieved."
