The Red Book - Carl G. Jung

We now have a copy of the Red Book in our reference collection. Though written between 1914 and 1930, Jung’s heirs denied access to the book until 2001, and it was not published until 2009. Jung refers to the Red Book as “a voluntary confrontation with the unconscious” through which he developed his theories of archetypes, collective unconscious and individuation. The book itself is a work or art, written in illuminated Gothic script and containing numerous paintings, and is well worth a visit to the Library to see.

We also have Jung’s biography : Memories, Dreams, Reflections for loan.

My Stroke of Insight

Jill Bolte Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: She had a massive stroke, and watched as her brain functions -- motion, speech, self-awareness -- shut down one by one. An astonishing story.

Please drop by the library if you would like to read Dr. Taylor's book, or you can listen to her amazing story on TED: http://www.ted.com/talks/jill_bolte_taylor_s_powerful_stroke_of_insight.html#

All Canadians now have one-click access to The Cochrane Library thanks to the collaborative work by the Canadian Health Libraries Association and the Canadian Cochrane Network & Centre who successfully secured a national license for a nine-month pilot period. (Exp.Dec 31 2009)

Canadians are one click away from the best available evidence on which health treatments work, which ones don’t, and which may cause harm. As of April 15, everyone in Canada with Internet access will be able to view the full content of The Cochrane Library, which provides evaluations of health treatments.

This nine-month pilot project provides a national subscription for Canadians to have access to the wealth of information in The Cochrane Library at http://www.thecochranelibrary.com/. Until now, The Cochrane Library has only been available to some Canadians through a patchwork of networks and libraries across the country.

Cochrane Groups
The Cochrane Collaboration assesses most areas of health care. To do this, it is divided into Cochrane Groups: Cochrane Review Groups, each of which concentrates on a specific healthcare area. Some of the Cochrane Goups that you may be interested in are:

The Brain that changes itself: stories of personal triumph from the frontiers of brain science

We've just added some new books to our library. One of them, The Brain that changes itself by Dr Norman Doidge, gives an overview of the science of neuroplasticity--the study of the capacity of the brain to alter and reorganize itself under the influence of learning and experience.

The book is a collection of case studies, told through the stories of patients, scientists and doctors, who, without operations or medications have made use of the brain's own ability to change. Some describe patients who had what were thought to be incurable brain disorders; others are about people who wanted to improve the functioning of their brains or preserve them as they aged.

To view the CBC “Nature of Things” Documentary of The Brain that Changes Itself, click here.

For more information about the book, visit Dr Norman Doidge’s web site.
